#325: Lisa Blair // Facing Fear

LisaArt.png

#325. Lisa Blair is an adventurer, author, and a multiple world record holding sailor. She is a tenacious individual with a global mindset. Her boat, Climate Action Now, is a brilliantly colorful poster of a positive approach to tackling climate change. In this episode, Emma interviews Lisa about her journey into sailing, facing fear in the icy Southern Ocean, and what adventure she is planning next.

In 2017, Lisa set out to break the record for a solo, nonstop circumnavigation around Antarctica. She was dismasted south of Cape Town, about three-quarters of the way through the passage. Unstoppable as ever, Lisa repaired Climate Action Now in Cape Town and completed the circumnavigation, setting her first world record. The following year she set her second world record, circumnavigating Australia nonstop, becoming the first woman to do so solo and unassisted. On that voyage, she also set the new overall speed record as the fastest mono-hull to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around Australia in 58 Days.

Lisa has taken her experiences and written a wonderful book, Facing Fear, about her 2017 Antarctic circumnavigation. Lisa also speaks at events about her experiences at sea and as a professional solo sailor. There has been a film made about her Antarctic record setting trip, Ice Maiden. Lisa just announced that she is going back to the Southern Ocean to try to better her record set for a solo, non-stop, unassisted circumnavigation of Antarctica. Our first experience with Edson was when we retrofitted a tiller onto ARCTURUS before our first trans-Atlantic, ten years ago now. Edson supplied a custom machined rudder-post extension and cast bronze tiller head, which is still on ARCTURUS under her new owner today.

Steering on offshore boats is a ‘mission critical’ system and whether it’s tiller hardware, binnacle steering, replacement chain, cables & sheaves or even basic steering maintenance, Edson has you covered.
