Cruiser's University - Annapolis

  • Historic Inns of Annapolis 38 State Cir Annapolis, MD, 21401 United States (map)

Sign up for Cruiser's University during the Fall Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD and don't miss Andy's three lectures on Monday, October 12. Topics are below.

Money & Cruising

Andy Schell will discuss the many aspects of money involved in outfitting a cruising boat and actually living the dream! This will not be a 'typical' talk about money – there will be real-life case studies with actual dollar figures, and there will be lots of talk about how to save money by simply not spending it on useless stuff. Andy will discuss the costs involved in refitting a boat for ocean sailing, and specifically mention what you can easily do yourself (and save some cash), and what should be left to the pros. Finally, he'll discuss how much it costs to live aboard in various places  between the US, Caribbean and Europe.

Eastern Caribbean Hot Spots

As an adventurous cruising sailor and multi-season staff member for Broadreach, taking teenagers on sailing adventures in the Eastern Caribbean, Andy Schell and his wife Mia Karlsson have explored the island chain from the BVI to Trinidad and most places in between. In this talk, Andy distills his experiences into a 'best-of' guide to he and Mia's favorite places. Some of them you'll know as legendary – the Tobago Cays, for instance – while others are off-the-beaten path, like Montserrat and Ile Fourche. They're all unique and will leave an indelible impression. Andy will discuss these destinations, look at detailed charts of the area and explain how to make the most out of your Caribbean cruising, including how to interact with locals, dealing with currency issues, travel to and from and living on island time.

LIVE Podcast With Rick & Julie Palm: Monohull to Multihull

Andy Schell sits down with circumnavigators Rick & Julie Palm for a live recording of Andy's popular '59º North' podcast to discuss the transition from monohulls to multihulls. Rick & Julie went around the world in a Tayana in the 1990s, upgraded to a Saga 48 to continue sailing between Maine and the Caribbean, and recently bought an Outremer 50 catamaran in Europe, sailing her home in the ARC+ rally via the Cape Verde Islands and St. Lucia. Andy will interview them briefly about their cruising history and in more detail about their new cat, in an attempt to find out what the challenges were in making the transition, what they did right, what they did wrong and how you can make the same leap. The chat will be open to audience participation with Q&A time throughout, and will be published on the '59º North' podcast thereafter.
